Can gout be caused by medications?
Asked 4 years ago
I have been on medication for blood pressure regulation for around 6 months now. Shortly after starting the medication, I found that I was having some pain in the joint of my big toe. Could the two be related? If so should will the symptoms subside if I stop taking the medication?

There are certain types of medications which can increase the risk of gout. These include those designed to treat people with high blood pressure, such as diuretics (also known as ‘water tablets’). These can lead to gout by reducing the amount of fluid in your body by making you urinate more, which can lead to an increase in uric acid crystals in your blood, which is what causes gout. It is best to speak to your physician for their advice before deciding to stop taking any medication, as they will be able to explain the benefits and risks.
