Can exercise and physical activity help prevent gout flare-ups?

Asked 4 years ago

Hey, I have had gout on and off for around 3 years now. Would being more active help reduce the inflammation or just invoke it more? Or would it be more sensible just to perform joint mobility exercises?

Yes, regular exercise and low to moderate levels of physical activity, can prevent your gout flare-ups. Mobility and low-level strength training exercises are a good way to keep stiff joints flexible, maintain strength and help you get back to normal activities after a gout flare-up. However, I suggest not performing any exercise during a gout attack or an acute episode of gout since strenuous movement will accelerate the inflammatory process and aggravate the pain.
