Can popping a blister actually make it worse?

Asked 4 years ago

Hi, I have a blister on my pinky toe from my shoe rubbing and I'm not sure what to do about it. I've read that popping it can make it worse or risk infection, but I'm not sure how likely that is if I keep it clean. What should I do? Leave it alone and let it heal on its own or pop it? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Yes, it can, so leave it.

The fluid within the blisters acts as a germs barrier, protecting the wound while new skin forms underneath it. If the blisters break, either you popped it, or it got popped on its own, bacteria may infect it and slow the healing process.
