What are some key differences between shoes designed for walking and running?
Asked 4 years ago
Hey, I'm curious to know what sets apart walking shoes from running shoes. I've always just bought sneakers and worn them for everything, but I'm starting to wonder if that's not the best approach. I want to make sure I'm wearing shoes that will provide me with the support and protection I need, but I don't really know how to tell the difference between a shoe that's meant for running versus one meant for walking or any other kind of activity. Any help would be appreciated.

There are a few subtle differences to look out for. A running shoe should have more cushioning in the heel to help to absorb heavy impacts, whereas a walking shoe doesn’t require quite as much heel cushioning. The heel on a running shoe may flare out slightly to the sides, again to provide extra support, which a walker may not need. Both should be flexible enough for the terrain, although a running shoe may feel slightly lighter.
